The Rev. Dr. Alan Ka Lun Lai, his wife Fanly Kwan and their children Paulina, Matthew, and Gloria, came to serve at Mount Olivet Lutheran Church on September 1, 2006.

Pastor Alan, born and raised in Hong Kong, came to Canada in 1982 to complete high school. He has been studying in many cities in North America such as Toronto, Montreal, Regina, Saskatoon, and New York City. In 2004 he earned his Doctor of Education degree at Columbia University, New York, following a Master of Sacred Theology and Master of Divinity at theological seminaries at Saskatoon and Regina. His research includes multicultural teaching and learning, religious leadership, Jewish-Christian dialogue and Asian cultural studies. He has published numerous articles in academic journals and is a member of the Academy of Religious Leadership.

Pastor Alan has served in both Chinese-speaking and English-speaking congregations in Canada. Alan is a gifted preacher, teacher, theologian, musician and writer. He is committed to multicultural learning and open to other cultures. Pastor Alan has served the BC Synod as a member in the CTEL (overseeing the progress of seminarians) and currently is a member of the Colloquy Examination Committee (final examination of candidates for ordained ministry). Pastor Alan was Assistant Professor of Religious Education at Vancouver School of Theology before coming to Mount Olivet Lutheran Church.

Pastor Alan loves music of all kinds. He is an amateur classical pianist and he practices piano almost every day. He also plays guitar and learned to play the cello for a brief time. In his spare time, he plays piano music by Chopin and Rachmaninoff. He is also working on a book project.
